Who Knew?

The venerable Maserati brand has a colorful story to tell! Learn more about Maserati through these fun facts.

  1. In 2005, together with Pininfarina, Maserati released the Birdcage 75. This modern concept racecar aimed to push the edges of style and technique, while simultaneously evoking the old Birdcage racecars from the late 1950s and early 1960s. The Birdcage 75 is made entirely of sustainable materials and, while this car is not meant to be mass-produced, Maserati did produce the Birdcage 75 for a select few.

  2. The Maserati Quattroporte, which premiered in 1963, was one of the first car models to efficiently blend a sporty car with an everyday agenda. The Quattroporte was the perfect car for both business and family, yet could also perform like a racecar. Aside from the Rolls Royce, it was also the only car of its time that came with air conditioning standard.

  3. A variety of notable personalities and great minds have been Maserati owners and enthusiasts, including Bono, Leonid Brezhnev, Sammy Davis Jr., Henry Ford II, Ralph Lauren, Luciano Pavarotti, Prince Rainier III of Monaco and Ronald Reagan.

  4. The second series of Hot Wheels toy cars, released in 1969, included a Maserati Mistral.

  5. Starting in the 1960s, Maserati began naming some of its cars after the world’s strongest winds: the Mistral, Ghibli, Bora, and Shamal. Each model aimed to evoke “the power and elegance of the strongest winds and hurricanes.”

  6. The Maserati 3200GT was the first car to use LED taillights.

  7. In the Godfather III, Don Corleone drives a Maserati QP III on his trip to Italy.

  8. Henry Ford II, owner of Ford motors, drove a Maserati Ghibli for years. Allegedly, when asked whether as CEO of Ford Motors driving a Maserati was a good idea, he replied, “that Ghibli will only disappear from my parking space when you’ve designed me a Ford that looks just as good.”

  9. In 2005, the HBO series Entourage titled the second episode of its second season “My Maserati Does 185.”

  10. In 2005, Hein Wagner set a world record for being the fastest blind driver. Wagner, who has been blind from birth, drove 167 miles per hour in a red Maserati V8 Gransport, shattering the previous record.
